Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters
New research suggests that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to original mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have stopped the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
